This smoothie is so sweet and creamy, you won't even taste the leaves, I promise!
This is by far one of my favourite green smoothie recipes. It works well as a filling breakfast, or as a post workout snack. It's super easy to make, and is packed with protein and iron. Trust me, it doesn't taste healthy.
Make this smoothie in your Nutri-Bullet, or another high powered blender and then pour it into a mason jar and seal with a reCAP drinking lid. This combo travels well and can double as a water bottle after the smoothie is done and the jar is rinsed.
Add the blackstrap molasses if you have it on hand in order to really amp up your iron intake during the day. Plus, this makes the smoothie really sweet! Kids absolutely love it!
If you ARE trying to raise iron levels, I suggest that you have this smoothie along with a high Vitamin C fruit, such as orange, pineapple or mango. Alternatively, you could sip on some lemon water. Vitamin C will greatly increase your natural absorption rate of non-heme iron.
Now, onto that recipe...
Makes enough for one smoothie.
1 tsp spirulina
1-2 scoops vanilla flavoured protein powder (we used Harmonized Fermented vegan protein)
1 cup spinach
2 cups cold water - you can also sub in some ice cubes, or plant milk for an extra creamy experience.
3 Medjool dates - regular dates work fine too, just make sure to soak them in warm water first.
1 tbsp flax or chia seeds
*Optional: 1 tbsp blackstrap molasses - this gives you an extra kick of sweetness and iron!
• Throw all ingredients into a high powered blender and blend until smooth. • Drink immediately, or pour into a to go cup and enjoy later in the day.
